I am an artist

I am an artist

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”

— Pablo Picasso

Messy With no more care than a child – this works for me 🙂

For a lot of us, coming out and saying that is really really stupidly hard.

I don’t know why – some are intimidated by the word, or feel they don’t deserve it, or feel the need to explain or justify their “right” to use the word. It’s all B.S.

An artist is someone who creates art. Nothing more complicated than that. You do not need to be a “professional artist” or a “trained artist” or a “working artist” to use the word artist to describe yourself.

There are as many “types of artists as there are artists in the world – the one thing we share is that we create something from nothing. Something that has never existed before, and never can be created again. Because we are all unique, it is impossible for me to create “your” art, or for you to create mine. Sure, you can copy – but that’s not art – not for me.

Anyway, now that I’ve left that paid job thing it’s much easier for me to say to people when they ask what I do “I am an artist”. Then, when they ask questions – and almost everyone does – it gives me permission to talk about the kind of art I create and why I create it. That’s the hard part now!
