I love old books – I love the look, the feel, even the smell of them. There’s nothing like walking into a used books store and experiencing the history of all those words.

I also really love using found materials in collage, along with my own painted papers – so sometimes a book just might fall prey to my creative urges.

In these collages I’ve used some old book pages, the hardened glue and threads from the binding to provide a sense of history, stained tissue, painted paper, and paper with moulding paste texture. The series title was inspired by a quote from Anatole France (this was his book I destroyed after all…)

“All changes, even the most longed for, have their meloncholy; for what we leave behind is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.”

In this, the book has died, but it has entered another life.
