“Painting is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you do.”
-Edgar Degas
I suspect Degas had the reactions many of us of had … “My 6 year old granddaughter paints like that”, “I could do that”, “All you did was throw some paint at the canvas”…
No… the layers, the decisions, the response, the angst, trying to draw you in, trying to engage … none of this is easy. But it must be done. And if it’s good… when you see it you are attracted, you are moved, and you think – but this seems so easy…
Analysis
Key Features:
- Horizontal Layers: The painting is divided into sections, each with its own colour palette and texture. These layers transition smoothly, emphasizing harmony.
- Circular Motifs: Repeated circular shapes appear throughout the piece, some defined and others more subtle. These symbols add a sense of continuity and movement.
- Textural Variety: I’ve used a mix of techniques to create contrast—smooth areas, rough textures, and gestural marks. This variety makes the piece feel dynamic yet cohesive.
- Colour Palette: The soft pinks, greys, and whites contrast with the bold mustard yellow and copper tones. This juxtaposition evokes both calm and energy.
Concept Behind the Title:
The title, “Good Feels Easy,” hints at the idea that while the painting may appear effortlessly balanced, there’s a clear intention behind every detail. It suggests the idea that simplicity and ease are often the result of thoughtful work. This concept reflects the artwork itself, where the layered composition and harmonious design seem natural yet deliberate.
