Wearable Art – A big YES! for me

I have always loved clothes – casual, dressy – my wardrobe is stuffed full. Part of this is that I keep my items for a long time – basically until they are worn out. I really don’t believe in “fashion” – one trend is much like the next and everything repeats itself eventually – the cheap throwaway fashion items are a scourge on the planet – so wasteful!

But style – oh style is another matter entirely. It’s part of being alive – I believe that we all have nuggets of creativity hidden inside, and we express that creativity in many ways – it comes out in your clothing, your home, even how you cook! Your personal style is something you can carry with you throughout your life. It transcends “fashion” – it is ageless, timeless – and will always be right for you.

Art for Every Body

Let’s face it – buying originals can be a big investment, and out of reach for some people. But – there are many ways to enjoy art in your life without having to invest in original pieces.

I believe you should be able to enjoy art in your life in many forms, not just a painting on a wall, or sculpture.

The Design Process

Each of my fabrics is unique to my designs – no other manufacturer has access to these – and I only produce small quantities of each design. What that means for you is that it’s highly unlikely you’re going to see someone wearing “your” dress at the office.

I create the patterns from my paintings – I photograph the paintings at a high resolution, and sometimes change them in my editing software. Some of the designs come from finished paintings, some from my sketchbook, and some from patterns that I have painted specifically for the purpose of design.

With that photo, I then create the design in 3d software – placing the image on the blank shape and manipulating it to get the design I want. I then send the high resolution photo and the design to one of my manufacturing partners.

They finish the products from here – the individual pattern pieces are printed, cut and sewed by skilled seamstresses. After completion, they are sent to me for a final check of quality, before being packed and sent to you. This extra step does mean that custom orders take a bit more time and it’s extra work for me, but it’s important to me that you are not disappointed in your purchase – I think you’re worth it.

Slow Fashion & Small Batch Production

Fast fashion is killing our planet – cheaply produced goods made in the thousands … if you do buy them they fall apart in a season (by design). If no one buys them they wind up in 3rd world countries in massive garbage heaps. We can do better.

My clothing is the opposite of this – I don’t want you to have to buy new clothes every season. I hope you love and wear my wearable art for years to come – and I produced as quality garments with this in mind. Not only that – I am not creating thousands of these garments – I buy a few – just enough to stock my shop or take to markets.  I create Made to Order garments if I don’t have just what you want in stock (at no additional cost). The handmade Made to Order pieces do take a bit longer – usually about a month – but at least we can be confident that it’s not going to end up in a bin, unsold and unloved.

Easy to Wear

I definitely believe in comfort – when we are more comfortable in our clothing we are more confident – and the clothing still looks great!

I do have some form-fitted styles, but they are in stretchy materials that move with you. The chiffon garments are all loose and flowy (and just a little glam!).

Some women do worry about polyesters and the weather – but I am one of those “omg I’m having a moment of heat” women, and I wear mine year round. The lightweight chiffons are very breathable, tanks and loungepants made of moisture wicking materials, and even the sweater knits are lightweight and breathable.

Many of my pieces are meant for layering – it makes it so easy to throw on a simple black top and pants and dress it up with an overpiece. Or throw a kimono on with jeans for a boho look. Style it your way!

And versatility is built right in … there are so many ways to wear my Draped Kimono you could take this one overpiece away for a week and wear it every day in a different way! Check out this blog post for ideas.  Many of my styles have multiple “ways to wear” – just use your imagination – fold, flip and twist and that beautiful Chiffon Duster becomes a scarf!

Easy to Care For

All of the clothing I sell is Machine Washable in cold water. No need to hand wash or head to the drycleaner! I advise using a lingerie bag for the more delicate materials – Silk or Chiffon – just in case there’s something else in your washer like a zipper that might damage them.

And yes, you can throw most of them in the dryer – these fabrics have actually already been heated to a much higher temperature than your dryer, so that the dyes bond permanently with the fabric. But just keep in mind that drying your clothes in a clothes dryer does break down the fabric over time, and will shorten its lifespan. Best to hang these to dry – most are so lightweight that they will dry very quickly.

Best of all – most of the fabrics are VERY had to wrinkle. This is a huge plus in my books! It means you can throw an overpiece into your bag, head off to work, then change clothes and go for a night on the town without stopping! Or travel to your favourite holiday spot without worry about carrying a steamer or an iron.

Silk of course does wrinkle – we can’t avoid that. But hanging in your steamy bathroom when you shower generally fixes it right up. And the ponchos tend to roll a bit on the edge – easily fixed with a light application of spray starch (and that should last until you wash it out).

Made to Order / Custom Design

If one of my designs is not available in a particular collection, you’ll see “Made to Order” above the Add to Cart button on the page. That means that I do have this design available – just not in stock. Check the “Made to Order” time in the info box on that page.

But … Contact me if there is something in particular you’re looking for that you don’t see anywhere on this site – a dress for a special occasion, a cover up for your resort holiday – something you’ve been searching for and just can’t find. I will work with you to find the style you want in the size you need. Leave a bit of time for this process – custom design takes 6-8 weeks, however there is no additional charge for the service.

How Can I be Confident This Will Fit?

We all know the pain … different brands – different measurements – the same size.

I have to admit – some of my products DO vary in size – I work with more than one manufacturer, and they are not consistent across the board. For example, my Long Sleeved Kimonos are very roomy – and in “One Size”. I am confident that this really can fit almost everyone – including plus sizes. But you need to be tall to carry it off – at 5’4″ this one really swamps me. However my Belted Kimonos come in Small/Medium and Large/X-Large. But definitely won’t fit a plus. I’m a 14/16 and I can wear the Large/X-Large open (not belted). On the other hand, I can comfortably wear the Relaxed Fit Tank from the same manufacturer in X-Large.

I want you to be happy with your purchase – and you need a great fit to do that. So, for every garment, I have included either a Size Chart with recommended measurements (where there are different sizes) or actual measurements of the garments I have in stock and notes on the fit.

I hope this is enough to give you confidence in your purchase – if you have any questions please reach out!
