“There’s always more to a story than a body can see from the fenceline.”
-Barbara Kingsolver
I am reminded of living in Australia…it’s different there in how people manage their properties. Everywhere you go, there are miles and miles of fences, city, rural – it doesn’t matter – so many fences.
I’ve always wondered about the people who lived behind them, how they came to be there, what they were so urgently trying to protect. And every once in a while, in all these miles of fences, there would be a broken section, and I would wonder, what, or who, might escape.
Analysis
Key Features:
- Colour Palette: The artwork is dominated by neutral tones—black, white, grey, and touches of earthy gold. These colours create a sense of starkness and contrast, evoking the feeling of a windswept landscape or weathered materials.
- Composition: The painting is divided into horizontal layers, resembling strata or horizons. Each layer varies in texture and tone, giving the impression of depth and a sense of progression or time.
- Linework and Geometry: The upper section features thin, uneven vertical lines that suggest a broken or incomplete fence, tying directly to the title. Below this, diagonal intersecting lines form a subtle diamond grid, adding structure and echoing the idea of something once orderly but now fractured.
- Texture: The use of scraping, layering, and rough brushwork creates a tactile quality, mimicking the appearance of aged surfaces, such as weathered wood or eroded landscapes.
- Minimal Figures or Objects: The lower section includes subtle marks that resemble a lone figure walking or standing amidst a barren scene, adding a human element to the narrative.
Concept and Interpretation:
The title, “Broken Fencelines,” suggests themes of separation, fragility, and impermanence. Fences traditionally symbolize boundaries or protection, but their “broken” state in this painting evokes vulnerability, passage, or the erosion of those barriers over time. It may symbolize a transition, a journey, or the breakdown of divisions—whether physical or emotional.
The starkness and simplicity of the composition, paired with the subtle human presence, invite reflection on solitude and resilience in the face of nature or time.
Emotional Tone:
The painting carries a sense of quiet melancholy but also openness and possibility all within a minimalist aesthetic. It feels grounded yet introspective, making it a piece that can spark thought and emotion in its viewers.
This artwork would appeal to those who appreciate understated, conceptual pieces with a strong connection to natural landscapes and the passage of time.
