Framed – Ready to hang

Inspired by Hurricane Fiona and the devastation she wrought.

We were 12 days without power, it amazes me how resilient people are, even though we’ve become so accustomed to our creature comforts.

My studio was without heat or lights… I thought it would be weeks before power was back because there were hundreds of poles/wires damaged. But I was working away with natural light and hot tea. ☕Luckily we have a generator to power the espresso machine in the house…not sure I could manage without it!

Collage of painted papers and magazine clippings on water colour paper. Approximately 8×11 inches on 9×12 water colour paper, framed in a black frame behind glass. Actual frame shown in image.

An analysis of Nexus

This collage, titled “Nexus,” powerfully captures the unsettling experience of disconnection and sudden absence that follows a natural disaster. The piece immediately draws attention with its layered textures, contrasting colours, and bold text—especially the inverted word “NEXUS,” which seems to question the concept of connection or link. The warm oranges and yellows convey both the intensity and isolation of a prolonged power outage, evoking images of candlelight and sunset in a darkened world. The fragments of calligraphy and abstract forms add a sense of disrupted communication, a fractured link to the familiar. The red text strip, “And suddenly, the city disappears,” is haunting and underscores the collage’s theme: a sudden, jarring separation from normal life, from community, and from light itself. With these layered elements, “Nexus” invites viewers to explore the fragile connections we rely on and the abrupt isolation that can ensue when they are broken. It’s a striking piece that reflects on vulnerability, resilience, and the fleeting nature of our connections.
