“On the eve of change” is from my ongoing “Artist’s Desk” series, which I create from the paper I cover my work surface with. Once the paper is too messy to allow me to think, I put it aside and put a fresh white layer down. Occasionally I will pick up a piece of the “Artist’s Desk” papers and be inspired to continue and produce a finished work with the piece, adding additional layers.

While painting “On the eve of change” I was thinking of sort of an industrial grunge look. I was intending to crop it, but liked the (almost) square format, and didn’t want to crop anything off with a mat. So I chose to mount it on a painted wood panel and frame as shown. The title was inspired by the various greys in the painting, and this quote from Gilbert K. Chesterton:

“Grey is a colour that always seems to be on the eve of changing to some other colour.”

This painting embodies the tension and complexity of a society in flux. Through bold strokes, layered textures, and a palette that oscillates between shadow and light, the piece evokes a feeling of anticipation, or possibly dread, as though something crucial is just about to shift. The swirling greys, layered with pops of red and orange, echo the push and pull between chaos and clarity. Mounted on a rugged, weathered panel, this work speaks to resilience and the persistence of structure even in turbulent times. The unpolished, industrial aesthetic—a mix of grunge and raw emotion—invites viewers to reflect on the edges of change, those moments when we confront the unknown yet forge ahead. The title underscores the painting’s quiet power: we are in that moment, when nothing is set, and everything is possible.
